What is Pure Tone Audiometry?

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) is a standard test used to measure your hearing ability across different sound frequencies. At Hearing 360, we use this test to accurately assess your hearing health. It’s one of the most reliable methods to check for hearing loss and is recommended for people of all ages. The test is simple and non-invasive, making it an ideal tool for identifying hearing issues early. Whether you’re experiencing difficulty hearing conversations, or certain sounds seem muffled or distant, PTA can help pinpoint the specific frequencies where your hearing is affected. This detailed evaluation not only helps in diagnosing the type and severity of hearing loss but also provides a solid foundation for personalized treatment plans. At Hearing 360, our audiologists use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure accurate and comprehensive results. PTA is especially beneficial for those who may have been exposed to loud environments over long periods or those with a family history of hearing issues. By identifying hearing loss early, we can recommend the best course of action to protect and improve your hearing, whether through hearing aids, therapy, or other interventions. Regular hearing tests are an essential part of maintaining overall health, and PTA is a vital step in preserving your ability to engage with the world around you.

How PTA Works

During the test, you’ll be seated in a quiet, soundproof room and given a comfortable pair of headphones to ensure that no outside noise interferes with the process. A series of pure tones, varying in both pitch and volume, will be played through the headphones, targeting a wide range of frequencies that the human ear can detect. These tones will range from low, deep bass sounds to high, sharp pitches, and each sound will be delivered to one ear at a time to check your hearing individually for each ear. As you listen to the tones, you’ll be asked to respond by pressing a button or signaling the audiologist whenever you hear the sound, no matter how soft or faint it may be. This response helps us determine your exact hearing threshold—the softest sound you can detect at each frequency. The test is non-invasive and only takes a few minutes. By carefully analyzing your responses, we can map out an audiogram, a visual representation of your hearing ability, which helps us identify any hearing loss or areas where your hearing may be compromised. This precise and detailed assessment enables us to provide personalized recommendations for improving your hearing, such as hearing aids or other forms of treatment, ensuring you receive the best care possible at Hearing 360.
